December,
2010, my wife Mike (Mikelle), and I, moved to
Briarcrest
Drive the weekend of the 22
inch, record snowfall!
Who knew that this difficult
decision would begin with the
excitement of that
snowfall?
Both Mike
and I have lived in Eau
Claire all of our lives.
Mike on the west side and I on the
north side. Once we
married (45 years now),
we have lived west (three times),
south, and north on the
Chippewa
River. What a great city.
Although we liked our condo at Mill Run Estates on the upper west
side, we felt isolated and found that we were putting on about four
hundred miles a week getting to where we needed to go. Everything seemed too far
away. So, with some trepidation (thinking the location may be too
busy and noisy next to the highway), we bought the house on
Briarcrest
Drive and settled in. We were wrong about
that!
Not only,
do we love our house, where you could find us most mornings having
coffee on the four season’s porch, but it is not noisy and, hardly
any traffic at all. Who
knew?
We were
right about the savings in driving costs. We can only imagine how high
those costs would now be, given the current prices since the
move. But that wasn’t
all. How great is it to be able to drive five minutes to almost any
shopping or entertainment need we could want?
Shortly
after moving in, it felt like we had gone back in time to what we
remember neighborhoods being when we grew up. Friendly, kind and
caring! Neighbors
actually talk to each other outside, help each other when needed,
and visit. We received
cookies from John and Theresa Anderson, who also shoveled our house
out that first weekend before we moved in. Chris and Amy Polzin stopped
by as well. Wow - seems we made the right
decision.
And, of
course, there is always Jim and Bea Larson across the street from
us. Jim continually
shows all of us up with his energy and friendliness. Jim, having
reached a mature age, is almost always one of the first ones in the
neighborhood to be out shoveling or taking care of the lawn. When the snow gets too deep,
Chris Polzin snow blows him and others out. So does John Anderson! Who
knew we would find those kinds of neighbors
again?
Duane and Eileen
Berglund welcomed us on behalf of the Otter Creek Neighborhood
Association. Not only
did they welcome us, but also surprised us with the news that the
Otter Creek Association represents all of us in this neighborhood
and consider all to be de facto members! Last
summer marked our first as participants in the
association/neighborhood thrift sale-what a great event. And, later we joined many of
our new neighbors at the association picnic.
Mike and I are glad we
moved and became a part of this great neighborhood! Who
knew?
